As the first day of Spring approaches and wildflowers start to bloom, dreams of longer days and warm sunlight remind me how much dirt and dust has collected. This is typically the time of year I give everything in the house a good scrub!
I go through the closets and discard any items that haven’t been worn in over a year. Those gently worn or sometimes new with tags (yikes!) clothing go to charity. I clean out the fridge and wipe up any random spills that have collected under the produce drawers. I throw out expired items like salad dressings and I hand scrub my floors. The bathtub sparkles like new. I even take a toothpick to remove that unsightly junk that collects around the rim of the kitchen sink!
No matter how much I clean, I seem to forget something…
How often do you clean out your cupboards? I used to think canned food lasted forever but I was wrong. We know that we should avoid buy canned items that are dented or leaking due to risks of food poisoning. However, what about those expiration dates?
Mayoclinic.com advises that canned foods with high acidity (tomatoes) only lasts about one and one-half years. Whereas, meats and vegetables can last two to five years.
Also, canned foods should be stored in a dry dark place and not in the garage due to temperature and humidity fluctuations, according to WebMd. 
We often keep canned vegetables (mostly beans) and soups in the event of an emergency. However, we should probably cycle through those canned items, too; and discard any canned items that are leaking or bulging. When it comes to expiration dates or use-by dates on cans, the USDA states “…a product should be safe, wholesome and of good quality — if handled properly and kept at 40° F or below.”
However, if you tend to toss things that expire then do what the supermarkets do…rotate your cans so that the older items are towards the front. Doing so might help ensure your canned foods are used within their prime. Otherwise, do what I do add more fresh items of what’s in the can. For instance, I found a can of Cream of Mushroom soup that was, ahem, a few years past the date. The can was in good condition so I cooked it with chicken and a cup of fresh cut mushrooms for replenished taste.
So don’t forget to add the cupboards to your spring cleaning chores!

Great reminder to clean out your pantry. I typically keep canned beans, etc. for an emergency situation but have found it very helpful to store bulk items (dried beans, lentils, grains, etc.) in clear glass containers. Such a great, inexpensive organizing tool.
