Eleven year old Birke Baehr presents his views on our food system in this short five minute video. Well spoken Baehr argues for organic and local sourcing and why he wants to be an organic farmer when he grows up. His video on Ted.com has received plenty of comments and isn’t that the point…to spark conversation whether it is supportive or against?
While Baehr’s talk is an overview, he reminds us to shop locally. “It seems to me we can either pay the farmer or pay the hospital,” Baehr says. So if you want to pay your local farmer, start by:
- finding your local farmer’s market here http://www.localharvest.org/
- or search your city’s website; and,
- Eating what’s in season
- Visit epicurious’s food map here. http://www.epicurious.com/articlesguides/seasonalcooking/farmtotable/seasonalingredientmap
We should all try to support our communities and purchase local seasonal produce when possible.

Talks like this make important information more accessible and interesting to younger generations. A lot of us have had to learn these lessons the hard way, much later in life. It would be a great benefit to the world for more children to understand the value of eating well and leading a healthy life.

I agree Luke, its inspiring that this came from someone so young. Its very hard to change patterns we develop when it comes to food…..I know because I have been trying for years! The chemicals put in food today have literally changed the food we eat from what it was back in grandma and grandpas days. Thats why your website is so important.
PS- To both Tabitha and Luke-My flour came yesterday, thank you so much! Can’t wait to try it. They sent a catalog along, I will be using it for future shopping. (I’ll share this with you Molly!)
