Today is World Food Day and it reminds me that not everyone eats enough, let alone has access to, nutritious food. In the most recent statistics reported by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, 925 million people in the world are hungry. In the United States, approximately 37 million Americans, including 14 million children, are receiving food assistance according to the Feeding America 2010 Hunger Report.
Here are two steps we can all take to help end hunger:
1. Donate locally.
a) Take in a bag of non-perishable food items and produce, make a monetary donation or coordinate a Buy-a-Bag program at work or school! For example, every $1 donated to my local food bank, 3 meals can be distributed to those in need.
b) Find your food bank here: Feeding America
c) Global food banks: The global Food Banking Network
2. Sign the petition to end world hunger. 1 Billion hungry
No one should live hungry. Take the two steps above to support the cause to end hunger.
